Trump and 'The Wall'
In Donna, Texas the first section of Donald Trump’s infamous wall on the southern US border is being constructed. (TO READ MORE CLICK HERE) Until now, Trump has not constructed any new barriers on the southern border, only improved and repaired existing border walls. The New York Times covers the community response, Trump’s promises concerning the border wall, and the new construction’s progress.
The new wall is going to span 30 miles west of Donna near a state park and “will take months to complete” (nytimes.com, Construction in Texas). Trump states “We’re building it at breakneck speed” and promises to build 500 miles of barrier by 2020. Currently “$9.8 billion has been set aside in funding from the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security and a Treasury Department asset-forfeiture fund”. The wall has sparked controversy among towns along the south-western border, “private landowners along the Rio Grande whose property is needed for the wall are fighting the government in court, with new lawsuits filed “all the time,” said Ricky Garza, a lawyer with the Texas Civil Rights Project”. However, despite all the backlash and opposition the Trump administration faced due to the wall, “the actual construction sites have operated smoothly, with little fanfare”.
Many question the legitimacy of constructing a border wall along the entire US border. Some argue that to control illegal immagration it is necessary to block people from crossing the border without detection. Others argue that it is not necessary to build across the entire border, just in areas that struggle with smuggling and illegal immigration. Alternately, some believe the US should have open borders and the money used to build a barrier should be used elsewhere. What argument do you side with? Do you think the wall Trump is building is reasonable?
